The road to carbon free is also the road from carbon free, as the transport of cargo by sailing vessels was carbon free for centuries. However, adapting the ambitious CO2 reduction goals, agreed by IMO in 2018, with the current global trade demand is the real challenge for the maritime industry within the next decades. We can already see several local and international regulatory initiatives with regards to the CO2 emission reduction and more will come in future. Nevertheless, we can also see several achievements made by the maritime industry today, but of course we are also facing some challenges. To meet the CO2 reduction goals, the maritime industry will get more diverse, with higher complexity due to new technologies and solutions. But this will also bring new opportunities for all stakeholders in the market. In this context an overview about the current and upcoming CO2 related regulations will be discussed.
