Manoeuvring in waves is a wide topic, and various issues are inventoried, ranging from the side drift of a ship, course variations in waves, or broaching. There is not one method alone that describes this well. Knowing the limitations of the various theories is key to providing the correct answer to all questions related to manoeuvring in waves. The presentation will show examples of questions related to course keeping in waves. The present academically fashionable case is a turning circle in regular waves, carried out with the KCS containership. For this case, the results of calculation methods will be compared to model test results. Conclusions and recommendations will be drawn.
