Due to rising fuel costs and commercial pressure on the shipping market ship owners and operators are looking for ways to improve efficiency of their vessels. Three strategies for the propulsion side will be briefly touched upon before a propeller with new section profiles will be presented. It will be explained how this new section works and how it influences the propeller design. The consequences for the propeller and engine designer will be shown in detail.
Finally three case studies will be presented: A new-built tanker where the new propeller design replaced the propeller of another manufacturer, a container vessel retrofit with de-rating of the main engine and a bulk carrier where during the engine selection the special features of the new propeller were taken into account.
